From the moment you step into this three-story, custom home in SkyRidge Park City, it’s evident that it was carefully crafted for a family that savors time in the Utah mountains. There are plentiful indoor and outdoor spaces for everyone to connect, as well as peaceful places to escape. The main foyer and great room provide a dramatic sense of arrival with sweeping views of Jordanelle Reservoir and Deer Valley Resort, but a commissioned painting that integrates the names of all 20 family members is perhaps the warmest welcome.

The 7,130-square-foot retreat was built for three close-knit generations: a set of grandparents, five sons and their wives, and eight grandchildren. Hibbs Luxury Homes, LH Design and JSARC Architects + Interiors teamed up to create the Park City getaway. After considering various locations, the family chose a hillside homesite at SkyRidge, located across from the new Deer Valley East Village

“I was excited to see the lot, which has a great natural fall line, so every single level of the home has a great view,” says Kim Hibbs, owner of Hibbs Luxury Homes in Park City. “The homeowners wanted to design and build a home that could handle capacity, which is sometimes as many as 20 people.”

They weren’t aiming to create a showpiece home, but rather to smartly integrate the proper number of bedrooms and gathering spots. In addition to six bedrooms and 6-and-a-half bathrooms, there are spacious main-floor and lower-level living areas; three heated and covered patios; an outdoor kitchen; and a gear room with cubbies and lockers to house equipment for skiing, riding and golfing.

The homeowners envisioned building a vacation home that the whole crew wants to visit regularly, a hope that became reality when most of the family gathered for Thanksgiving and Christmas after construction wrapped up last year. “Everyone said, ‘We’re doing this again next year, right?’” The homeowners add, not only is it a place where the cousins can make fun and lasting memories, the mountain modern residence is “an oasis and a haven for our entire family.”

For example, the great room flows seamlessly into a stylish dining and kitchen area that invites interaction. “The kitchen and prep-pantry were designed based on the homeowners’ lifestyle,” says Lydia Huffman, owner and lead designer at LH Design. “They all like to cook and hang out around the kitchen island.”

Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, rift white oak cabinets that are stained black, a custom blackened-steel range hood, and dark stratus quartz countertops are part of the overall look and functionality of the culinary paradise. The countertops and backsplash are Le Chic by Cosentino, which looks like marble but isn’t porous to avoid staining. “With the gorgeous rust and gold veining in most of the countertops and fireplace wall treatments, we felt like the brushed aged gold on the Restoration Hardware bar stools and dining chairs were a perfect touch,” Huffman adds.

On the main floor, the kitchen, dining and living space is flanked by the owner’s suite on one side and a large secondary guest suite on the opposite side, both accessed by private hallways that provide buffers from all the action. Another secluded guest suite on the top level, which is connected by elevator to the two floors below, has a large bathroom with a blissful soaking tub and walk-in shower. “This room truly has some of the best views in the house,” she confirms.

Downstairs, there are two additional bedrooms and a bunkroom that comfortably sleeps six to eight and has cheerful, large-patterned checked comforters in black and taupe. The steps leading up to the bunk beds have built-in drawers and motion-activated lighting, so no one scrambles up and down in the dark. “The bunk room was quite a design accomplishment but is absolutely perfect for their needs,” says Huffman.

As one of the heartbeats of the home, the lower level also has a gym with glass Euro-Walls and an entertainment area with a comfy sectional couch, large-screen television and kitchenette, perfect for making movie-night popcorn and hot chocolate. This favorite area spills over onto a covered patio with lounge-style seating, a sleek linear fireplace and a hot tub.

“We put together a good team that really problem-solved quickly and effectively. Lydia was great at coming out and doing site visits for us. And Hibbs Homes was good at keeping us in the loop. Jeff [JSARC] did an amazing job designing this space for us. I feel like we did something right, getting a great team together that really collaborates together to get things done,” note the homeowners.

While the home’s meticulous architectural design speaks to its natural surroundings and occupants, one of the most meaningful aspects is an impressive collection of art by northern Utah artists. These commissioned works, coordinated by Trove Gallery in Park City, provide a depth of personality and sense of place. “The family clearly said to us, ‘We want to support local art,’” Huffman says. “Every one of the pieces has a story behind it.”

However, what you don’t readily see is just as important as the beauty of the finished home. Hibbs Luxury Homes builds high-performance homes and integrates features like upgraded insulation, radiant in-floor heat and highly energy-efficient windows and doors. “We want to deliver a home that is energy-efficient, comfortable to live in and affordable to maintain,” says Hibbs, who is a Master Certified Green Professional, a highly specialized certification from the National Association of Home Builders. “A focus on custom construction also allows us to incorporate the best materials, the latest science and better building practices at every step of the process.”
